In recent days, a short video clip has circulated widely online showing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu making a striking comparison:
In the clip, Netanyahu states that “Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan,” arguing that in history, power and ruthlessness—not morality alone—determine outcomes. Though he later clarified that he was referencing historian Will Durant, the remark has already sparked strong reactions across the Christian world.
From a Christian perspective, the issue is not simply that the statement is provocative. It is that it crosses a far more serious line. It is not only an insult to Christian belief—it approaches what many believers would recognize, plainly and without exaggeration, as blasphemy.
To compare Jesus Christ to Genghis Khan is not an exercise in realism—it is a category error so fundamental that it collapses under its own weight. Christ is not a failed conqueror to be measured against history’s warlords. He is not a political actor whose “success” can be judged by territorial expansion or military domination. Christianity has never claimed that Jesus came to win the world on the terms of empire. It claims precisely the opposite.
The crucifixion was not defeat, but victory. His kingdom is not of this world. And His refusal to wield power as tyrants do is not weakness, but divine purpose.
This is why the statement has provoked not only offense, but deep alarm among Christians. It does not merely misunderstand Jesus—it inverts Him. It suggests that moral truth is subordinate to force, that righteousness without ruthlessness is ineffective. In doing so, it echoes a worldview the Gospel explicitly rejects.
To describe such a distortion as blasphemous is not rhetorical excess. It is a recognition that the comparison reduces Christ to the level of those He came to transcend. It places Him, even hypothetically, within a framework of domination and violence that Christianity defines itself against.
Even if one accepts Netanyahu’s broader point—that nations must be strong to survive in a dangerous world—the framing remains profoundly troubling. It implies that morality alone is insufficient, that power is the ultimate arbiter of history. Yet Christianity insists that history is not ultimately governed by power, but by truth.
As Nikos Kazantzakis suggested in The Saviors of God, history often gives the appearance that darkness prevails at first, but in the end, good always triumphs!! The deeper Christian tradition is even clearer. As Saint Augustine wrote, God permits evil only so that a greater good may ultimately emerge from it. What appears victorious in the moment is not what endures.
The timing only sharpens the concern. This is Lent, a sacred time for Christianity… And Israel is engaged in a dangerous confrontation with Iran and depends heavily on the support of nations with deep Christian roots, especially the United States. In that context, invoking a comparison that many Christians perceive as dishonoring Christ is not merely insensitive—it is strategically bewildering.
And here lies the deeper irony—one that should give pause to any serious observer.

And yet here, from the leader of a nation appealing to Christian allies, we hear something far different—not reverence, but reduction; not respect, but comparison. It is not a coincidence that Netanyahu is the leader of the apartheid state of Israel and is already condemned for war crimes by the International Court of Justice!!
For Christians, the conclusion is unavoidable. If Jesus Christ appears to have “no advantage” in the calculus of worldly power, it is because He never submitted to that calculus at all.
And that is not weakness.
