As Helleniscope has recently reported in May 1963, JFK opposed Israel’s nuclear ambitions in three very strong letters to Ben Gurion and six months later (by coincidence?) was assassinated (link here). On July 2, 1957, U.S. Senate: Senator John F. Kennedy, age 40, delivered a speech titled “Imperialism—the Enemy of Freedom.” Speech primarily about Algeria and French colonialism. But Kennedy included a statement about the Middle East. Kennedy said: “The legitimate claims of the Arab refugees to repatriation or compensation for their lost lands and property, which we voted for in the United Nations in 1948.” First time a major American political figure publicly endorsed the principle that Palestinian refugees have the right to return to their homes or receive compensation. Israeli government shocked. American Jewish leaders were furious. They demanded that Kennedy clarify and retract the statement. Kennedy refused. Stood by words. Within days, Kennedy received critical letters from American Jewish leaders. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver wrote that Kennedy’s statement was “dangerous” and “irresponsible.” July 23, 1957: Kennedy responded to Silver. Did not apologize, did not retract. Kennedy wrote: “I did not call for repatriation of all Arab refugees. I called for recognition of their right to repatriation or compensation, as stated in the UN resolution.” Kennedy: “I recognize Israel cannot accept the return of all refugees without endangering its security. But refugees have legitimate claims that cannot be ignored forever.” American Jewish organizations continued to pressure. Kennedy met with Jewish leaders in late 1957 and early 1958. He did not retract the statement. 1960: Kennedy ran for president, spoke frequently about supporting Israel, and said almost nothing about Palestinian refugees. January 1961: Kennedy became president. 1961: Appointed Joseph Johnson as special envoy to explore refugee solutions. 1962: Johnson’s proposal suggested that refugees be given a free choice: return, resettle, or emigrate. Israel rejected, Arab states rejected. Kennedy let the proposal die quietly. November 1963: Kennedy was assassinated. The statement remains unique in American presidential politics. No president since has explicitly endorsed Palestinian refugee rights.

Yes Kennedy was more careful than most other western leaders on this issue— but what this account leaves out is that the Arab and non Arab Muslim states rejected the 1947 UN partition plan, launched a war against the new Jewish state, and then spent decades refusing to integrate Palestinian refugees while keeping them in camps as a political weapon against Israel. The other missing part of the story is that Palestinians were not the only refugees. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were driven from Arab countries, Iran, and other Muslim lands, while Middle Eastern Christians have seen entire ancient communities reduced to a fraction of their former numbers to almost none left. Justice requires an acknowledgement of all who lost homes and homelands, not only one side of the conflict. The refugee problem persists because too many Palestinian leaders refused to accept coexistence with a Jewish state and not only Palestinian leadership but other muslim states as well seeing them as creating political instability – remember the civil war in Lebanon or Black September in Jordan? Greek Armenian and Assyrian Christians now all too well what it means to be refugees as their communities experienced a massive destruction not in Israel… but in muslim states such as Turkey. A destruction far far worse than anything the Palestinians have ever experienced. And this happened long before Israel was reborn as a state.
Certainly – all sides are to blame for this impasse. But after the 1993 Oslo Accords it is certainly the Israeli side that promoted the Greater Israel policy and rejected what they had agreed to in Oslo.
Because the Zionists control the US media and press, for decades they were misleading the public, saying that JFK was killed by the Mafia, by his driver, by Onassis, whoever, except the ones who had the biggest motive, themselves!
