EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis).  In a recent post on social media, AB Elpidophoros justified once again the nickname “Elpidoktonos” (hope-killer) yours truly gave him on the day of his election in 2019. he said in this statement: “I come from Istanbul. In Constantinople, the priests don’t have long beards, they don’t wear cassocks, and they don’t even wear crosses. We wear suits and ties like modern people. We wear robes only when we go to serve. In other cases, we don’t wear a rasa… This is the kind of clergy I want back in our Church…”  It was a spectacular misrepresentation of the reality in Turkey, where the “Neo-Ottomans” and the Sultan Erdogan DO NOT ALLOW the priests to wear their proper attire as prescribed by their religious tradition… But Elpidoktonos tries to present the prohibition as “modernity.”… Unbelievable!…

Elpidophoros, Come To Your Senses!!

We wear robes only when we go to serve. In other cases, we don’t wear a cassock… This is the kind of clergy I want to return to our Church”, said Archbishop of America Elpidophoros!

Of course, Mr. Elpidophoros forgets that Constantinople is located in Turkey, which forbids non-visiting clergy (earlier also to them) to walk around dressed in the honored cassock and to carry the insignia of an orthodox clergy.

Second mistake made by Mr. Elpidophoros in his above statement, which was made on a social media site – is the phrase “I want it to return to our Church”! And in fact, the mistake is twofold.

What does “I want” mean? Who is it that wants it, and where does it want it? Who has the right to “want” in our Church? Is the Church his fiefdom and Mr. Elpidophoros “wants” it? And who told him that what everyone wants is done in the Church?

Also, can he tell us what it means to “return to our Church”? When did the Church institute the suit and tie and then change it to a cassock??? How much audacity and foolishness! It reminds us of Aesop’s stubby fox, who wanted to pass off the cut-off tail as normal for all foxes!

One more… pearl of Mr. Elpidophoros is the phrase, “We wear suits and ties like modern people”! The honest cassock of the Orthodox cleric Mr. Elpidoforos is not old-fashioned clothing that needs modernization! The priest is not a simple man either. When a man is ordained, he ceases to be George, John, etc., and he becomes Fr. George, Fr. Ioannis, effectively and not formally!

The Fathers of the Church tell us that the human body of the priest becomes sacred like the Holy Table! That is why we have examples where the priest’s body is used in extraordinary cases as the Holy Altar. Read Mr. Elpidophoros the Life of St. Lukianos! The cleric is not a simple person whom you want to “modernize”! That is why when the cleric dies, he is covered with the “air,” the sacred covering that covers the Saints!

And one last thing, because as long as one deals with such people, one only offers them advertising and gives them value.

Saint Maximus the Confessor says: “Deacons must become those who have conquered the passions.” Elders become those who submitted the calculations. Bishops, those who have reached theosis”!!! Is Mr. Elpidophoros somewhere near such concepts, or is the distance that separates him an abyss?

Ελπιδοφόρε Σύνελθε!!

«Κατάγομαι από την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Στην Κωνσταντινούπολη οι παπάδες δεν έχουν μακριά γένια, δεν φοράνε ράσα, δεν φορούν καν σταυρούς. Φοράμε κοστούμια και γραβάτες σαν σύγχρονοι άνθρωποι. Φοράμε άμφια μόνο όταν πάμε να υπηρετήσουμε. Σε άλλες περιπτώσεις, δεν φοράμε ράσα… Αυτό είναι το είδος των κληρικών που θέλω να επιστρέψει στην Εκκλησία μας»,τάδε έφη Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής Ελπιδοφόρος!

Λησμονεί βεβαίως ο κ. Ελπιδοφόρος ότι η Κωνσταντινούπολη βρίσκεται στην Τουρκία, η οποία απαγορεύει στους μη επισκέπτες (παλαιότερα και σε αυτούς) κληρικούς να κυκλοφορούν ενδεδυμένοι το τιμημένο ράσο και να φέρουν διακριτικά ορθοδόξου κληρικού.

Δεύτερο λάθος που κάνει ο κ. Ελπιδοφόρος στην ανωτέρω δήλωσή του, η οποία έγινε σε μέσο κοινωνικής δικτύωσης- είναι η φράση «θέλω να επιστρέψει στην Εκκλησία μας»! Και μάλιστα το λάθος είναι διττό.

Τι θα πει «θέλω»; Ποιός είναι αυτός που θέλει και πού το θέλει; Ποιός έχει το δικαίωμα να «θέλει» στην Εκκλησία μας; Το τσιφλίκι του είναι η Εκκλησία και «θέλει» ο κ. Ελπιδοφόρος; Και ποιός του είπε ότι στην Εκκλησία γίνεται αυτό που θέλει ο καθείς;

Επίσης, μήπως μπορεί να μας πει τι σημαίνει «να επιστρέψει στην Εκκλησία μας»; Πότε η Εκκλησία είχε θεσπίσει το κοστούμι και την γραβάτα και μετά το άλλαξε σε ράσο;;; Πόσο θράσος και ανοησία πια! Μας θυμίζει την κολοβή αλεπού του Αισώπου που ήθελε να περάσει την κομμένη ουρά ως φυσιολογικό σε όλες τις αλεπούδες!

Ένα ακόμη… μαργαριτάρι του κ. Ελπιδοφόρου είναι η φράση «Φοράμε κοστούμια και γραβάτες σαν σύγχρονοι άνθρωποι»! Το τίμιο ράσο του Ορθοδόξου κληρικού κ. Ελπιδοφόρε δεν είναι παλιομοδίτικη ενδυμασία που θέλει εκσυγχρονισμό! Ούτε ο ιερέας είναι απλός άνθρωπος. Όταν ένας άνδρας χειροτονείται, παύει πια να είναι ο Γιώργος, ο Γιάννης κ.ο.κ. και γίνεται ο π. Γεώργιος, ο π. Ιωάννης, ουσιαστικά και όχι τυπικά!

Οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας λένε ότι το ανθρώπινο σώμα του ιερέως γίνεται ιερό σαν αγία Τράπεζα! Γι’ αυτό και έχουμε παραδείγματα, όπου χρησιμοποιείται το σώμα του ιερέως σε έκτακτες περιπτώσεις για Αγ. Τράπεζα. Διαβάστε κ. Ελπιδοφόρε τον βίο του Αγ. Λουκιανού!  Δεν είναι ένας απλός άνθρωπος ο κληρικός, που θες εσύ να τον «εκσυγχρονίσεις»! Γι’ αυτό και όταν πεθάνει ο κληρικός καλύπτεται με τον «αέρα», το ιερό κάλυμμα που καλύπτονται τα Άγια!

Και κάτι τελευταίο, γιατί όσο ασχολείται κανείς με τέτοιους ανθρώπους μόνο διαφήμιση τους προσφέρει και αξία τους δίνει.

Λέγει ο Άγιος Μάξιμος ο Ομολογητής: «Διάκονοι πρέπει να γίνονται όσοι νίκησαν τα πάθη. Πρεσβύτεροι όσοι υπέταξαν τους λογισμούς. Επίσκοποι όσοι έφτασαν στην θέωση»!!! Είναι κάπου εκεί κοντά ο κ. Ελπιδοφόρος ή μήπως η απόσταση που τον χωρίζει είναι άβυσσος;
