Weeks before the Saint Nicholas National Shrine honors Ukraine’s president in New York, Metropolitan Mitrofan of Horlivka is recovering from wounds sustained in a disputed drone strike at his cathedral.

As the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at Ground Zero prepares to honor Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with its 2026 “Beacon of Hope” Award in New York on September 26, reports from eastern Ukraine are raising uncomfortable questions for Orthodox Christians about the continuing human and ecclesiastical cost of the war.
The award is scheduled to be presented during the Shrine’s annual Beacon of Hope Dinner at Casa Cipriani. Organizers say it recognizes Zelenskyy’s leadership in defending Ukraine, freedom, and human dignity during the war with Russia. Saint Nicholas National Shrine is closely identified with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, which Archbishop Elpidophoros has publicly described as “our Saint Nicholas National Shrine.”
Only weeks before the planned New York ceremony, Metropolitan Mitrofan of Horlivka and Sloviansk was wounded in a drone strike on the grounds of the Epiphany Cathedral in Horlivka on August 23.
According to the Horlivka Diocese and the Moscow Patriarchate, the attack injured Metropolitan Mitrofan, Protodeacon Roman Stepin, and two volunteers of the Patriarchal Humanitarian Mission, Sergey Solodkov and Ekaterina Kuptsova. Church authorities attributed the strike to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Although initial reports stated that Metropolitan Mitrofan’s life was not in danger, his injuries were serious enough that he was later transferred to Moscow for treatment. Patriarch Kirill visited him at St. Alexy Central Clinical Hospital on September 1 following surgery.
The Russian Church and local diocesan authorities have described the incident as a Ukrainian drone attack. The Metropolitan’s wounding and hospitalization are documented; responsibility and intent remain based principally on accounts from Russian and local Church authorities.
Nevertheless, the timing presents a striking contrast: while one prominent Greek Orthodox institution in America prepares to honor President Zelenskyy as a “Beacon of Hope,” an Orthodox bishop lies recovering from wounds suffered in a drone explosion at his cathedral in the war-torn Donetsk region.
