Answering the questions of the director general of the TASS news agency A. Kondrasov during his Christmas interview on January 7, 2024, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Mr. Kirill, pointed out that Patriarch Bartholomew is under the strong influence of “those who have the power in this world,” while his support of the schism in Ukraine is not just a mistake, but “his great sin”.

“Political factors led to the creation of the schismatic “church” in Ukraine, unfortunately, supported by the Patriarch of Constantinople, who is under the strong influence of those who have power in this world. He does not enjoy the support, he does not have his own flock in the place where he is (I mean Turkey), and indeed, it is not easy for him”, underlined Patriarch Kyrillos.
“In all probability, this unfavorable context shapes the position of the Patriarch of Constantinople, with which many are unable to agree. That is why supporting the schism in Ukraine is not just a mistake of the Patriarch; it is his great sin”, added the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
“When the schismatic processes began, behind them, I have no doubt, was the political will not only of the enemies of Russia but also of the enemies of Orthodoxy. Because the cutting off of the Russian Church from the Churches of the Middle East means primarily the weakening of those Churches. But by God’s mercy, most Orthodox leaders are nevertheless wise people and do not succumb to this kind of pressure, although this pressure is exerted, and some retreat from their positions. But some heads of Churches resist it bravely”, concluded the Moscow Patriarch.

Μόσχας Κύριλλος: «Ο Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος δεν είναι ελεύθερος»
Απαντώντας στις ερωτήσεις του γενικού διευθυντή του πρακτορείου ειδήσεων TASS Α. Κοντρασόφ κατά τη χριστουγεννιάτικη συνέντευξή του στις 7 Ιανουαρίου 2024 ο Αγιώτατος Πατριάρχης Μόσχας και Πασών των Ρωσιών κ. Κύριλλος, επεσήμανε ότι ο Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος τελεί υπό την ισχυρά επίδραση «εκείνων οι οποίοι έχουν τη δύναμη σε αυτό τον κόσμο», ενώ η υποστήριξη από εκείνον του σχίσματος στην Ουκρανία δεν είναι απλώς σφάλμα, αλλά «μεγάλη του αμαρτία».
Αυτά αναφέρει η ιστοσελίδα Patriarchia.ru επικαλούμενη το Συνοδικό Τμήμα Σχέσεων της Εκκλησίας με την Κοινωνία και τα ΜΜΕ.
«Πολιτικοί παράγοντες οδήγησαν στη δημιουργία της σχισματικής “εκκλησίας” στην Ουκρανία, την οποία δυστυχώς υποστήριξε ο Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, που τελεί υπό την ισχυρά επίδραση εκείνων οι οποίοι έχουν δύναμη σε αυτό τον κόσμο. Δεν απολαμβάνει υποστήριξη, δε διαθέτει δικό του ποίμνιο στον τόπο, όπου ευρίσκεται (εννοώ την Τουρκία) και πράγματι δεν του είναι εύκολο», υπογράμμισε ο Πατριάρχης Κύριλλος.
«Κατά πάσα πιθανότητα, αυτό το δυσμενές πλαίσιο και διαμορφώνει τη θέση του Πατριάρχη Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, με την οποία πολλοί αδυνατούν να συμφωνήσουν. Γι’ αυτό και η υποστήριξη του σχίσματος στην Ουκρανία δεν είναι απλώς ένα σφάλμα του Πατριάρχη, είναι η μεγάλη του αμαρτία», πρόσθεσε ο Προκαθήμενος της Ρωσικής Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας.
«Όταν άρχισαν οι σχισματικές διαδικασίες, πίσω από αυτές, δεν αμφιβάλλω, ευρισκόταν η πολιτική βούληση όχι μόνον των εχθρών της Ρωσίας, αλλά και εχθρών της Ορθοδοξίας. Διότι η αποκοπή της Ρωσικής Εκκλησίας από τις Εκκλησίες της Μέσης Ανατολής σημαίνει πρωτίστως την αποδυνάμωση εκείνων των Εκκλησιών. Με το έλεος του Θεού όμως, η πλειονότητα των ορθοδόξων ηγετών είναι ωστόσο άνθρωποι σοφοί και δεν υποκύπτουν σε τέτοιου είδους πίεση, αν και αυτή η πίεση ασκείται και κάποιοι υποχωρούν από τις θέσεις τους. Όμως, ορισμένοι επικεφαλής Εκκλησιών αντιστέκονται σε αυτό γενναία», ολοκλήρωσε ο Πατριάρχης Μόσχας.

Helleniscope, were you the one’s who coined the term Phanariot Doublespeak or is this a common term to describe people from there? I know that every region has their own unique traditions and mannerisms. I am more interested abouy examples duplicity over leaders of the Greek community of Constantinople over the years. I always thought highly of the Greek community there and it’s history, , but surely there are some stories I may be missing about cowardice and betrayal. Clearly the community has been through a lot today, and while it is still has its signs of dynaminism, with its remnants, the community is similar to Native Americans living on a reservation, or to be harsher, animals in a zoo.
Even before the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans the Phanariots were in communication with them. But after 1453 AD they made a deal with them and ensured the power of the Church over the faithful in the Ottoman empire. At the same time, as they were supremely educated and they each spoke foreign languages, they became the diplomats of the Ottomans usually appointed as “dragomans” meaning “interpreters”. As such soon they became the Ottoman diplomats and served the interests of the “Sublime Porte” – much the same way as Bartholomew and Elpidophoros bow before the Sultan Erdogan today.
Eventually in the 18th century they became the rulers of Wallachia and Moldova (today’s Romania) where they ruled for over a century. They were hated with passion by the people – much in the same way we today despise the arrogance and self-servedness of the Phanar. Just ask any Romanian you know and you will see what they think of them…
Your historical perspective on the Phanariots is correct. They didn’t considered themselves as Hellenes, only as Romaioi. There was no concept of Hellenism until the early 19th century. They were part of the Ottoman empire, just as the Moslems were, only more educated and were serving the empire as loyal subjects, who had to learn to survive in a lawless empire, that depended on the whims of the Sultan. They could literally lose their head at any time. So, in order to survive, they adopted a servile attitude. mixed with arrogance and double dealing.
Its easy for us to judge them harshly, but, what would we have done? You had to either adopt or perish. Even today, the Patriarch is a Turkish subject who lives in a nation that still disapproves of freedom of speech. So, he also has to adopt to survive in the soil that the church was founded.
Our problem was that when Hellenism finally arose as a concept (thanks to Hellenic Enlightenment, Rigas Feraios, Kathryn the Great who allowed Greeks to raise the Russian Flag on their ships and they became wealthy, and a number of other factors having to do mostly with the Diaspora and navigation and commerce through the Danube, in Venice/Trieste/Vienna and all over Europe), the Phanariots, educated as they were, they mostly remained glued in their Ottoman identity – many Patriarchs among them. Bartholomew is the latest in a long line of “Non Hellenes” in the Patriarchate. Some among them could be called “TRAITORS of Hellenism” without much thought.
I will say it again because it is worth repeating: Black Bart and Elpidokontos are heretics and schismatics. They bring shame to all of us who are Greek!

As noted by Helleniscope above, the Phanariote double-speak has been around for centuries. Stephen Runciman explains it beautifully in his classic book “The Great Church in Captivity.” He justifies the conniving and back-stabbing ways of the Phanariotes as a necessity to survive under slavery conditions. This condition was exacerbated by another Ottoman institution, the harem. The numerous concubines promoted their respective offspring for positions of power at the expense of other, more meritorious candidates. Ultimately, this led to corruption and internal decay. The Ottoman Empire withered but the Great Church survived and remained a beacon of hope. A conservative institution, the Patriarchate continues to placate “civil authorities,” who still enjoy certain legal powers over church affairs, some de jure and others merely de facto. We can all agree that the Great Church is indeed still in captivity. In the past, that did not prevent it from being a beacon of spiritual light for the world. Today, as we witness, is another story, a real tragedy of our own making.
Let’s face it, eventually the heretical Patriarchate of Constantinople will die from their own Spiritual Cyanide.
