In one more worthy event, the American Philhellenes Society will mark the 200th Anniversary of Lord Byron’s death, who sacrificed his life in the struggle for Greek independence. The event will take place in St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Niles, IL, a suburb of Chicago, on Wednesday, May 15, at 6 pm.
There are no words to express our eternal gratitude to Lord Byron, without whose participation the international support for the Greek Revolution and the Philhellenic movement would not exist. Simply put, his participation would be the equivalent of the Three Tenors or the three biggest rock stars of our time supporting a political cause. Lord Byron was the greatest celebrity of his time, and his poetry was a giant advertisement for the Greek Revolution. But there is a big difference between “advertising” a cause and sacrificing your life for this cause. Lord Buron gave it all for Greece; honoring his memory is the least we can do.
