EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis) Helleniscope, along with a few other courageous websites, has been reporting on this disturbing issue for several days now.
ELIAMEP, a prominent Athens-based think tank with strong connections to Washington, D.C. and Western policy institutions, took part in a shameful event hosted in the so-called “Palace” of Turkish-Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar. This event was held under the misleading banner of the “Greek-Turkish Forum.” Let us be clear: this is the very palace built on properties stolen from Greek-Cypriots!
And yet, our supposed Greek-American leadership remains silent. I searched PSEKA’s website and found no statement—please correct me if I missed something. To the best of my knowledge, neither AHI, AHEPA (led by a Cypriot, Mr. Tsivicos), HALC (also led by a Cypriot, Mr. Zemenides), nor Manatos & Manatos has issued any comment or condemnation.
The only one who has promised a response so far is Mr. Mataragas of the Hellenic American National Council.
Mr. Tsivicos, Mr. Christopher, Mr. Larigakis, Mr. Zemenides, and others: some of you have pushed back when I highlighted your deep ties to the State Department and your alignment with entrenched policy interests. Well, now is your chance to prove me wrong.
Why won’t you speak out against this betrayal?
Why the silence?

ELIAMEP legalized the symbols of the pseudo-state!
The meeting of members of the Greek-Turkish Forum with the occupation leader Ersin Tatar did not receive the attention it deserved in Greece. However, it caused justified anger in Cyprus , as the Greek delegation of the Forum not only met with the leader of the pseudo-state, but was photographed with the occupation symbols in the -supposed- presidential palace, which has been built on the bloody land of the Greek Cypriots .
- By Myrna Nikolaidou – “Estia tis Kyriakis” Newspaper
They did, in other words, what even foreigners visiting Tatar do not dare to do . All UN representatives and foreign actors meet the Turkish Cypriot leader in rooms without any symbol. And as if that were not enough, the Greek delegation to the forum also met with members of the occupation pseudo-government.
What does this mean? That Greek academics, politicians and ambassadors provided indirect legitimacy to the pseudo-state . And the question naturally arises whether this meeting is a harbinger of trilateral meetings between Greece – Cyprus and the pseudo-state or whether the ground is being prepared for cross-border meetings between Mitsotakis and Tatar .
This is precisely why the composition of the Greek delegation of the “Greek-Turkish Forum” is interesting , consisting of Ioannis Grigoriadis, head of the Turkey program of ELIAMEP, the internationalist, member of the PASOK Political Council and vice-president of the Socialist International, Polina Lampsa, Elias Klis, honorary ambassador, and Petros Liakouras, professor at the University of Piraeus. According to information from “EtK”, Konstantinos Filis, executive director of the Institute of International Relations of Panteion University (IDIS) and an analyst of international issues, was also present, but he was not photographed.

Tatar presented the position of the Turkish Cypriot side on the Cyprus problem , reiterating his vision for a two-state solution, based on sovereign equality and equal international status, something that Athens and Nicosia have categorically and repeatedly rejected . According to information from the “EtK”, Mr. Liakouras told Mr. Tatar ” to forget about sovereign equality ” and that if he is with the Greek Cypriots, he will win. However, everyone knows the occupation leader’s obsession with the two states and Ankara’s efforts – fortunately without success so far – for international recognition of the pseudo-state.
As for ELIAMEP, this is not the first time it has put forward pro-Turkish positions , but the important thing in this case is whether it continues to determine Greek foreign policy. The former director general of ELIAMEP, Thanos Dokos , is National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister with an upgraded role after the establishment of the National Security Secretariat last April .
Mr. Dokos has been the target of strong criticism on more than one occasion for his statements about the co-exploitation of the Aegean, while the current Director General of ELIAMEP, Maria Gavouneli, has gone a step further, directly linking the progress of Greek-Turkish relations to the convening of a five-party conference on the EEZ (4+1) with the participation of the pseudo-state.
In a front page headlined “ELIAMEP: Greece should recognize the pseudo-state!” on December 8, 2024, “EtK” had highlighted the specific references made by Ms. Gavouneli in her article in the newspaper “Ta NEA”, indirectly but clearly confirming the possibility of convening a five-party conference on the EEZ with Egypt, Turkey, Cyprus and the pseudo-state . At that time, of course, there was reference to secret talks between ELIAMEP and Ankara, which led, according to experienced diplomat Giorgos Aufantis, to the resignation of the Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Roussos Koundouros. Now, however, these talks have been revealed, although those present did not wish it to be so – there is no mention of it on the forum’s website.
Regarding Ms. Lampsa’s presence, PASOK may have distanced itself and clarified that she did not represent it at this particular meeting, however, the first question is whether Charilaou Trikoupi was aware of the contacts of Mr. Papandreou’s former close associate with the occupation regime . And the second question is whether a member of the PASOK political council has permission to attend meetings that are in complete contradiction with the party’s line, as well as national interests.
Equally worrying is the representation at the diplomatic level . This concerns not only the fact that Mr. Klis is an honorary ambassador, but mainly that Mr. Liakouras is an examiner of candidates for the diplomatic corps. In other words, he judges and directs tomorrow’s diplomats .
Of course, none of this should be surprising , given that the founding coordinators of the forum in 1997 were the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs under Simitis, Christos Rozakis, with the inimitable statement that “ Kastelorizo is remote from Rhodes, but it is close to the coast of Turkey ”, and the late Admiral Güven Erkaya, who was also the commander of the Navy in the Imia crisis. It is recalled that Mr. Rozakis had previously publicly characterized Greece’s positions on the Greek-Turkish issue as maximalist, expanding its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles, because in this way it “closes” the Aegean !
This meeting of the members of the Greek-Turkish forum with the occupying leader comes at a particularly critical juncture, where Greece is now surrounded by hostile and “friendly” -see Egypt- fire . The signing of an agreement between the oil companies of Turkey and Libya to conduct seismic surveys in four maritime areas south and southwest of Crete constitutes an attempt to implement the Turkish-Libyan memorandum on the ground.
And, if Athens does not act promptly and decisively, the worst is yet to come…
