European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi launched a scathing attack on the Greek Government, stating bluntly that the 57 deaths in the Tempi tragedy are a consequence of corruption in Greece.
The Romanian prosecutor—who in recent weeks has come under fire from the Greek Government for exposing the OPEKEPE scandal involving ministers and party officials—told the German news outlet ARD that financial scandals claim lives. She cited the Tempi tragedy as an example and noted that she receives “recommendations” from certain people not to conduct such thorough investigations into corruption cases.
“How many more tragedies must we endure before we finally understand that financial crimes are not minor matters?” Kövesi asked, stressing that corruption can have deadly consequences. She considers the Tempi disaster the most characteristic example of corruption in Europe. “Our investigations have shown that Greece received millions from the EU for its railway network. The signaling system was supposed to be upgraded. If the project had been implemented on time and correctly, the tragedy could have been avoided,” she said.
It is recalled that she authored the damning report against Greece on the “sinful” OSE Contract 717, which concerns railway signaling and remote control and is linked to the Tempi disaster.
While ARD’s report focused on Tempi, it also described the difficult work Kövesi faces in investigating corruption cases, from fraud in EU subsidies to cross-border crimes. “The biggest fraud cases in the EU are in her office,” the report notes. “There is no clean country. Corruption, subsidy fraud, tax and customs fraud exist everywhere,” Kövesi emphasized.
Indicative of her workload is the fact that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office under her leadership has launched investigations into more than 2,666 cases, with estimated damages of €24.8 billion.
Kövesi also revealed that she has become unwelcome among certain politicians. As she disclosed, some have told her: “Ms. Kövesi, you should not talk so much about these cases and you should not publish data.” For her, coming from Romania—a country with a high corruption index—it is still surprising that in Europe “there is a tendency not to address problems when they arise.” Kövesi became Romania’s youngest and first female Prosecutor General in 2006 at the age of 33, in one of Europe’s most corrupt countries.
“I saw how corruption affected our daily lives. I wanted to do something significant for society, and I thought I could make a difference through my work,” said the European Chief Prosecutor. In 2019, she became the first woman to hold the position of European Chief Prosecutor.
As for Germany, she said it is no exception either. Tax fraud is particularly common, resulting in the tax authorities losing nearly €10 billion annually.
From ARD’s report, it is clear that Kövesi is fully aware of the responsibility that comes with her position—as well as the reality. As she said, corruption will never disappear. “But the fight is worth it, because the sense of justice is essential for citizens, for democracy. This can only be achieved with an independent and strong judiciary.”

Καταπέλτης ἐναντίον τῆς ἑλληνικῆς Κυβερνήσεως ἦταν ἡ Εὐρωπαία Εἰσαγγελεύς Λάουρα Κοβέσι, ἡ ὁποία δήλωσε ξεκάθαρα ὅτι οἱ 57 νεκροί στήν τραγωδία τῶν Τεμπῶν εἶναι συνέπεια τῆς διαφθορᾶς στήν Ἑλλάδα!
Ἡ Ρουμάνα εἰσαγγελεύς, ἡ ὁποία τίς τελευταῖες ἑβδομάδες βάλλεται ἀπό τήν ἑλληνική Κυβέρνηση ἐπειδή ἔφερε στό φῶς τό σκάνδαλο τοῦ ΟΠΕΚΕΠΕ μέ τήν ἐμπλοκή ὑπουργῶν καί κομματικῶν παραγόντων, ἐδήλωσε στό γερμανικό μέσο ἐνημερώσεως ARD ὅτι τά οἰκονομικά σκάνδαλα προκαλοῦν θύματα. Καί ἔφερε ὡς παράδειγμα τήν τραγωδία τῶν Τεμπῶν καί ὅτι δέχεται «συστάσεις» ἀπό κάποιους νά μήν κάνει τόσο ἐνδελεχῆ ἔρευνα σέ ὑποθέσεις διαφθορᾶς.
«Πόσες τραγωδίες πρέπει νά ζήσουμε ἀκόμα γιά νά καταλάβουμε ἐπί τέλους ὅτι τά οἰκονομικά ἐγκλήματα δέν εἶναι μικροπράγματα;» διερωτήθη ἡ Κοβέσι, σημειώνοντας ἐμφατικῶς ὅτι ἡ διαφθορά μπορεῖ νά ἔχει θανάσιμα ἀποτελέσματα. Τό πλέον χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα διαφθορᾶς στήν Εὐρώπη θεωρεῖ πώς εἶναι τό δυστύχημα στά Τέμπη. «Οἱ ἔρευνές μας κατέδειξαν ὅτι ἡ Ἑλλάς ἔλαβε ἑκατομμύρια ἀπό τήν ΕΕ γιά τό σιδηροδρομικό της δίκτυο. Τό σύστημα σημάνσεως ἐπρόκειτο νά ἀνανεωθεῖ. Ἄν τό ἔργο εἶχε ὑλοποιηθεῖ ἐγκαίρως καί σωστά, ἡ τραγωδία θά μποροῦσε νά εἶχε ἀποφευχθεῖ», ἐδήλωσε ἡ εἰσαγγελεύς. Ὑπενθυμίζεται ὅτι ἔχει συντάξει τήν ἔκθεση-καταπέλτη εἰς βάρος τῆς χώρας μας, γιά τήν «ἁμαρτωλή» σύμβαση 717 στόν ΟΣΕ, πού ἀφορᾶ στήν σηματοδότηση καί τηλεδιοίκηση στόν σιδηρόδρομο καί συνδέεται μέ τήν τραγωδία τῶν Τεμπῶν.
Καί μπορεῖ τό ρεπορτάζ τοῦ ARD νά ἐπικεντρώθηκε στά Τέμπη, ὡστόσο περιγράφει τό δύσκολο ἔργο πού ἔχει ἡ Κοβέσι στίς ἔρευνες γιά ὑποθέσεις διαφθορᾶς, ἀπό ἀπάτες στόν τομέα τῶν κοινοτικῶν ἐπιδοτήσεων μέχρι διασυνοριακά ἐγκλήματα. «Οἱ μεγαλύτερες ὑποθέσεις ἀπάτης στήν ΕΕ εὑρίσκονται στό γραφεῖο της», ὑπογραμμίζει τό ρεπορτάζ. «Δέν ὑπάρχει καθαρή χώρα. Διαφθορά, ἀπάτες μέ ἐπιδοτήσεις, φορολογικές καί τελωνειακές ἀπάτες ὑπάρχουν παντοῦ», ἐπεσήμανε ἡ Kοβέσι. Ἐνδεικτικό τοῦ ἔργου πού ἔχει ἀναλάβει εἶναι ὅτι ἡ Εὐρωπαϊκή Εἰσαγγελία ὑπό τήν Kοβέσι ξεκίνησε ἔρευνες σέ πάνω ἀπό 2.666 ὑποθέσεις, μέ ἐκτιμωμένη ζημία 24,8 δισ. εὐρώ!
Ἡ ἴδια ἀποκαλύπτει πάντως ὅτι ἔχει γίνει δυσάρεστη σέ ἀρκετούς πολιτικούς. Κάποιοι μάλιστα τῆς λένε, ὅπως ἀπεκάλυψε: «Κυρία Kοβέσι, δέν πρέπει νά μιλᾶτε τόσο πολύ γι’ αὐτές τίς ὑποθέσεις καί δέν πρέπει νά δημοσιεύετε στοιχεῖα». Γιά τήν ἴδια, μέ καταγωγή ἀπό τήν Ρουμανία, μιά χώρα μέ ὑψηλό δείκτη διαφθορᾶς, προκαλεῖ ἀκόμη ἔκπληξη τό γεγονός ὅτι καί στήν Εὐρώπη «ὑπάρχει μιά τάσις νά μήν ἀντιμετωπίζονται τά προβλήματα ὅταν προκύπτουν». Ἡ Kοβέσι ἔγινε ἡ νεώτερη καί πρώτη γυναῖκα Γενική Εἰσαγγελεύς στήν Ρουμανία τό 2006, σέ ἡλικία 33 ἐτῶν, σέ μιά ἀπό τίς πιό διεφθαρμένες χῶρες στήν Εὐρώπη.
«Εἶδα πῶς ἡ διαφθορά ἐπηρέαζε τήν καθημερινότητά μας. Ἤθελα μᾶλλον νά κάνω κάτι σημαντικό γιά τήν κοινωνία κι ἔτσι σκέφτηκα ὅτι θά μποροῦσα νά κάνω τήν διαφορά μέσῳ τῆς δουλειᾶς μου», ἀνέφερε ἡ Εὐρωπαία Εἰσαγγελεύς. Τό 2019 ἔγινε ἡ πρώτη γυναῖκα Εὐρωπαία Εἰσαγγελεύς. Ὅσο γιά τήν Γερμανία, ἀναφέρει ὅτι οὔτε αὐτή ἀποτελεῖ ἐξαίρεση. Συχνές εἶναι κυρίως οἱ φορολογικές ἀπάτες, μέ ἀποτέλεσμα οἱ φορολογικές Ἀρχές νά χάνουν ἐτησίως σχεδόν 10 δισ. εὐρώ.
H Kοβέσι, ὅπως διαφαίνεται ἀπό τό ρεπορτάζ τοῦ ARD, ἔχει ἀπόλυτη ἐπίγνωση τῆς εὐθύνης πού συνδέεται μέ τήν θέση της, ἀλλά καί τήν πραγματικότητα. Ὅπως εἶπε, ἡ διαφθορά δέν θά ἐξαφανισθεῖ ποτέ. «Ὅμως ὁ ἀγῶνας ἀξίζει, γιατί τό αἴσθημα δικαιοσύνης εἶναι ἀπαραίτητο γιά τούς πολῖτες, γιά τήν δημοκρατία. Αὐτό μπορεῖ νά ἐπιτευχθεῖ μόνο μέ μιά ἀνεξάρτητη καί ἰσχυρή δικαστική ἐξουσία».
