The whole point of having a nuclear non-proliferation treaty, is that countries that don’t have a democratic government, that are ruled by strongmen, won’t get their hands on an atom bomb. It was always thought that countries of the West, such as the US, Great Britain, France, were responsible democracies, that would not touch the third rail of the nuclear option.

I doubt that Trump was demanding the atomic bombing of Iran. He might be demented, but he is not that far yet. He knows there’s a certain point that he cannot cross.
What are you talking about? Why do you forget that America is the ONLY nation to have ever used nukes? President Truman decided to go ahead despite the opposition of the victor of WWII General Eisenhower who, as a military leader, thought they nukes on Japan would not make a difference… And they actually didn’t… What made a real difference was the decision of the Red Army to invade Japan. The Japanese decided they preferred an American occupation than a Soviet one…
You are correct that America used the atom bomb first. The debate “if it was needed or not” is pretty much settled. The consensus of historians is that it saved over 150,000 American lives-plus -Japanese–, based on estimates of the casualties in the Okinawa invasion. There were dissenting voices, but the majority of advisers to Truman were convinced that the atom bomb was the best way to end the war.
I believe that America had the right to drop the bomb. Japan was the agressor, unlike the war of choice in Iran
The Russians didn’t declare war on Japan until AFTER the bombs were dropped. Stalin made sur that Japan was at its weakest, before commitment. He was not interested in the Far East. He knew that America had the upper hand. He wanted to dominate Europe. He couldn’t spare any troops for the Eastern front.

Bob I am not deeply versed in this but a few days someone I deeply respect supported that argument that the Soviets were the real reason the Japanese surrender. But if someone of the status of General Eisenhower was against it gives all of us pause on why we rushed to stop the atomic bomb. His opinion should have more weight than the President’s or all of the rest put together

Did you ever hear in Foxnews that in the Iraq-Iran war of the 1980s we supplied Saddam Hussein of Iraq with chemical weapons that he used against the Iranians and as a result hundreds of thousands of Iranians died? Yes, our CIA did it with the blessings of our “Christian” leadership. At the minimum we knew all about Saddam using them and did nothing. Not only that but 20 years later we invaded Iraq on this “excuse” – the WMDs that we had supplied him with… Even more remarkable, Iran did not reciprocate with their own chemical weapons – because it was against their religion…

Please, enlighten me, as to when Trump led troops so inferior in numbers, that the outcome was a pre-determined result, and knowingly gave his life in the attempt to impede a foreign invasion.

It’s simpler than that: they lost the War but they insist on winning the negotiations because they see themselves as “exceptionalists” – which is another word for “supremacists”… Until the time – and it is coming very fast – when a US aircraft carrier will sink to the bottom of the ocean and will take with it the US dollar… and then God help all of us!!…
Sec. 4 of the 25th Amendment provides steps for removing Trump, but I think it will be virtually impossible to do it. The Vice President and a majority of the cabinet must send to the speaker pro temp of the Senate and speaker of the House a declaration that the president is incompetent. Vance would then immediately assume the office as “Acting President.”
BUT, Trump could thereupon deny the charge and request a vote by the two houses of Congress. Only if two thirds of each house votes to remove him, will he be removed and be replaced by Vance. That’s not easy to do in this Congress.
At the start, the problem is that Rubio, Hegseth, and a couple of other presidential aspirants in the cabinet will not hand over the office to JD Vance that easily. In a few months they will declare their own candidacies.
The second problem is that it is not clear whether some cabinet-level members, like the UN Ambassador, the Director of Central Intelligence, Director of National Intelligence, and a few others must also concur. The text of the 25th Amendment refers to “a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide.” The vagueness as to who must concur will lead to a constitutional crisis if we go down that path.
My conclusion is that we’re stuck and must wait it out.

The regime was entrenched before this. The people may hate the regime but they love their country and will fight for it. Trump pretty much announced he would personally select Iran’s next leader and take their oil.
Any attempt at regime change would be a lunatic undertaking that will be worse than Iraq. No sane Iranian will accept the position to rule Iran. That person will be a target.
The only way out is deescalation. The US has to acknowledge this was a huge blunder and to attempt diplomatically to clean up the mess.
