EDITOR’S NOTE (Markos). As Great Lent begins, the geopolitical actions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate continue to impact and scandalize the Orthodox faithful, this time through the actions of the Estonian parliament, which is modeling a law similar to Ukrainian law 3894, banishing any Church that is considered a ” national security threat” (see below in English and Greek).

This obviously is a “convenient” way to eliminate the Estonian nationalist’s perception of a “thorn” that has existed within the boundaries of Estonia since the breakup of the Soviet Union.. it is also convenient for the long-term strategic plans of the Uniate movement for an “increase in loyalty to Constantinople” in a “Vatican-like” consolidation of influence that has been occurring in the East in recent years.   It is very difficult to forget in times like these the words of St. Kosmas the Aitolian from the 18th century… “τον Πάπα να καταρασθε…αυτος θα ειναι η αιτια για ολα…” which underscores that the Uniate movement originating in the Vatican See was 100% associated with the specific future event that St. Kosmas was referring to, and that the faithful Orthodox should always be educated on the history and objectives of the Uniate movement, in order to “discern its signs” when they unfold.
At this point it is also important to remind readers that “ethnophyletism“, the idea of “national and cultural identity defines an autocephalous Church” was condemned by an Orthodox Council in Constantinople in 1870 as being equivalent to a heresy (definitely causes division), but that edict has been totally ignored and reversed during Bartholomew’s tenure.
In Ephesians 4:11-4:13 we read: “…and He gave the Apostles, the Prophets, the Evangelists, the Shepherds and the Teachers towards guidance of the the holy ones, towards labor of assistance in building the body of Christ, until we might all arrive at the UNITY OF THE FAITH….”
How has the leadership of the Ecumenical Patriarchate contributed to the “Unity of the Faith” in recent history, with these continued divisive actions that promote ethnophyletism and Schism within Orthodoxy?  In contrast, how have long-term UNIATE strategic objectives been promoted as a result of 3+ decades of Bartholomew’s tenure?  As we are about to witness a Holy Week and Pascha in GOARCH that include Roman Catholic Cardinals “blessing” and “addressing” the Orthodox flock in provocative appearances during the holiest time of the year for us, let’s not allow people to dismiss the Uniate movement and its visible signs as a mere  “conspiracy theory”.  Unity of the FAITH is important, and that would involve a rejection of the Filioque and many other things before true “Unity” could ever be achieved between East and West, whether or not our current “leaders” are willing to defend the true Unity of the Faith or not…
If we truly believe the Scriptural statement that “you shall know them by their fruits” (Matt 7:16), then it becomes quite evident that the current leadership in Constantinople cannot be “known” as Apostolic, Prophetic, preaching the Gospel (“Evangelical” in the Orthodox sense), Shepherds, or Teachers, given that their actions are not resulting in the UNITY OF THE FAITH, but rather in DIVISION and SCHISM… When the resultant “fruit” is Schism, it’s time to demand a better “tree”… Perhaps if we all pray hard enough this Lenten period, God might send us a better “tree”, but the crimes against the Unity of the Faith are unfortunately continuing to unfold before our eyes in the meantime…

Estonia: The first reading of the bill on the ban on the Church took place

Reporting office: Romfea.gr

The Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) examined amendments to the Churches and Parishes Act in the first reading.

The Center Party and the Conservative People’s Party (EKRE) of Estonia voted in favor of withdrawing the bill from the agenda, but their proposal did not receive sufficient support.

According to information, the final approval of the law is expected at the end of March.

As we have written, in terms of its content, the new bill resembles the recently passed Law No. 3894 “On the Protection of the Constitutionally Enshrined Status”, which aims to effectively ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The Estonian bill, like the Ukrainian bill, invokes “national security” and in exactly the same way allows the state to dissolve any religious organization on the basis of an “expert opinion”, the principles and the order of which are not stated.

The Ukrainian law has been repeatedly criticized by international human rights organizations, including in the latest reports of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and in the reports of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).

According to expert estimates, the purpose of the Estonian draft law on the Church is to force the communities and holy monasteries of the Moscow Patriarchate to come under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, while simultaneously dissolving the “disobedient” communities.

Despite the significant number of churches granted by the authorities to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the number of its believers, according to official statistics, to this day remains 6 times less than the believers of the Moscow Patriarchate, and only one nun lives in the only holy monastery.

The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Estonia, Metropolitan of Tallinn, Stefanos, indirectly supported the bill, stating that “the source of the problem is not the Estonians, nor this country, but the Patriarch of Moscow.”

Also, Mr. Stefanos proposed to establish a separate auxiliary diocese to receive communities of the Moscow Patriarchate that will transfer to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Based on the proposal of Metropolitan Stefanos, the Estonian authorities demand that the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Holy Women’s Monastery of Põhtitsi be brought under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Finally, the Hierarchy and the holy clergy of the Orthodox Church of Estonia of the Moscow Patriarchate protest, indicating that the said bill violates freedom of religion and constitutes interference in the internal life of religious communities.

  1. The words of St. Kosmas are of course prescient, “damn the Pope, because he will be the cause of everything”. What he was also alluding to was that there will be a tremendous temptation to blame everything on the Orthodox Patriarch instead. That later temptation is quite evident.

    • Not sure if the majority opinion agrees with that allusion, but one thing is certain…from the days of the 4th Crusade, there has been a lot more “cursing of the Papacy” and its “Uniate vision” as a root cause for hostile actions against Orthodoxy than not…and whether or not Orthodox hierarchs decide to capitulate to Uniate pressures and “sell out” / bow down to the Pope (such that they get blamed for treason and violation of Canons) is a symptom of the Uniate problem, not a root cause.

Enjoy the “line-up” of “Orthodox” bishops kissing the Pope’s hand in the video below, especially after the 40th second…(technically, all these “fallen bishops” should be deposed, per the Canons):

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GROcDPGnrqs

At the end of the day, the Papacy doesn’t care “how” it succeeds at getting the Orthodox clergy and faithful to “kiss the Pope’s ring”, as long as it happens…the revival of ethnophyletism, as well as a twisted modern version of “ecumenism” by Bartholomew has played very well into the long-standing Uniate strategic vision.

      • Markos,
Thank you for the link. Some of the stuff I have seen and some I did not. Yes, I agree at the end of the day the pope does not care how is done. He may even give up the filioque and even his “infallibility” to make it happen. I was having these discussions with my orthodox friends over a decade ago. We must not be naive and keep reading the Holy Fathers and follow them. Those hierarchs that kiss the ring will answer for themselves to God. If they fail, we must make sure we stay up. It will become harder and harder for all of us. I don’t have time to read as much as I used to, but I am happy I read when I had the chance, so that now I can reject all the innovations that are not orthodox. The devil never sleeps and will find all kind of ways and people, including clergy, to hit our faith very, very hard.

      • Markos, St. Sophrony of Essex made the comment that bishops of our times have to be more diplomatic-minded in order to protect their flock from political forces. Having a bishop engaging in friendly dialogue (not capitulate) with Roman Catholicism and globalists/environmentalist can actually help protect the Orthodox faithful from both. This is also why, for example, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow maintains close connections and friendly dialogue with the Muslims of the Russian Federation. In both examples, the main message (which some lose sight of) is that the Church is not an enemy of the people, and thus, hopefully, the Church is protected from hostile forces.

As the Proverb says, “When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” Also, in the Sermon on the Mount, Christ said, “agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison”.

        • Diplomacy is not the problem. However, Capitulation, Dogmatic Compromise, Alteration of Tradition, and “kissing of rings” is DEFINITELY a problem…

It is possible to be diplomatic while avoiding the aforementioned trespasses.

But that requires solid faith, and examples such as observing hierarchs accepting a new hierarch confessing the “Filioque” clause during his ordination at the Phanar a couple years ago, in combination with videos like the the ones above does not really inspire confidence in the current hierarchy’s “stability” of faith (when compared to the old Fathers of the Church).

Basically, you can’t dress up a wolf in sheepskin and convince us that it is a sheep, when it behaves like a wolf in publicly available video evidence…

          • Markos, I hear your complaints, but I believe the things you mention, or allude to, are not reasons why the Russian Church has broken communion with the Phanar. I believe it is only the Old Calendarists that invoke your complaints as sufficient reason for breaking communion, and they have not just broken communion with the Phanar, but also with all the recognized Local Churches, including Russia.

The Russian Church has a long history of accepting Uniate clergy into the Orthodox Church without ordination. Historically, this practice was considered rather questionable by the Phanar. However, Patriarch Bartholomew has openly stated that he now accepts the Russian Church’s practice.

          • Joseph,

There are many practices perpetrated over the centuries by various Patriarchates that are “questionable”, depending on who is “doing whatever they want” at the helm… and that includes 70 years of communist-imposed “agent-bishops” in Moscow…an era of questionable “bishops” (including Philaret and his concubines/offspring), whose actions you are trying to “normalize” in some way or another…you’ll really need a more reliable comparison point.

I haven’t seen “very recent history” of accepting legitimately “defrocked” clergy and their followers-turned-Uniate back into Moscow’s jurisdiction either, so twisting things the way you do is quite amusing at best…And for a question that is difficult to answer…before “accepting” a controversial practice that Moscow may have adopted in times past, why didn’t Bartholomew FIRST accept the scriptural verse that states “let your yes mean yes”, given that for 27 years he signed his own name consistently on letters to Moscow asserting that Philaret was a deposed schismatic and that Kiev was Moscow’s jurisdiction?

Besides, the decision to “accept” their ordination appears to have had more to do with a substantial monetary gift from Poroshenko than any imitation from Moscow based on what was reported in the media at the time…of course, that would be considered Simony, and by default these ordinations can easily be declared invalid by a future Synod as a result. It would be interesting if the recent efforts to expose government waste one day include the exposure of the Poroshenko money trail. That would be quite fun to “see”…

In the meantime, how many Russian metropolitans have been photographed or witnessed kissing the Pope’s ring over the years? Where did Bartholomew’s metropolitans “look up to” in order to learn, “accept” and imitate that practice? I’ve asked you in the past if you are in favor of Canons being applied…there exists a Canon regulating what happens to clergy who receive blessings from a heretic. Wanna explain to everyone here what it says?

          • Markos, the Russian Church’s practice of receiving anathematized and schismatic clergy without ordination, and not just Uniate clergy but also regular Roman Catholic clergy, dates back to at least the time of Tsar Peter the Great, and probably even further. Sure, canons could certainly be brought up that would require ordination, but for political reasons it was expedient for the Russian Church to waive those canons and use economia for their reception. It’s sometimes the case that the bishop’s decision of whether to strictly apply the canons or to waive them often boils down to the given political situation.

In other words, if the Russian Church wanted to receive the OCU by economia and without ordination of their bishops, it is not actually a problem for them to do so. History shows this. Yet for political reasons made evident by the current war in Ukraine, that would pose a problem for the Russian Church as it would go against the Russian State’s current interests. To be consistent here, the Russian Church is presently using ecclesial canons primarily to defend the interests of the Russian State.

Yes, bishops can change their minds, and they often do when the political circumstances change. Patriarch Bartholomew has said that he changed his mind about receiving the schismatics in Ukraine when war broke out in 2014.

As regards to allegations of simony, it is just allegations. Nothing has been proven. Patriarch Bartholomew says he only received chocolates from Poroshenko. Regardless, the sin of simony is on the clergy who commit it. That doesn’t by itself “invalidate” any sacramental act.

Remember also that Moscow’s autocephaly, granted in 1589 by Patriarch Jeremias II, was provided as part of a fund-raising mission of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

          • The fact that he said that he received just chocolates from Poroshenko will forever stay as a prime example of his conniving and disgusting character. He has lost ALL credibility before people and his only remaining step is to approach with repentance God for forgiveness.

Helleniscope has uncovered forever Bartholomew’s true colors when we presented to him evidence of flagrant homosexuality of Emmanuel (then of France) and Maximos – among a myriad other sins. Instead of finding a form of punishment for them he inexplicably promoted them forever proving that he is leading a hellish institution.

          • Joseph,

You are referring to Moscow anathematizing, and Moscow re-accepting at a later date. That is not what is happening here.

In this case, Moscow anathematized, Constantinople concurred for 27 years, and due to “political” or “chocolate” pressures, they decide to “accept” while Moscow is obviously still “anathematizing”, and was the ORIGINAL “anathematizer”.

There is also a Canon on the books that clergy anathematized by Synod A cannot be accepted canonically by Synod B, unless (by a separate canon) Synod A somehow has turned heretical / schismatic itself. This violation alone (if you don’t like the Simony one) would also be a reason to depose all those bishops by a future Synod. The Church Fathers’ pen was much wiser than your “propagandist” pen, fortunately for all of us.

The comparison to Peter the Great or any “Uniate acceptance” action that was historically isolated within the jurisdiction of Moscow isn’t working, because the facts of the scenario is quite different in the current “tomos” situation. The flagrant violation of Canons and the obvious “flip-flopping” that Constantinople perpetrated cannot be ignored.

          • Markos, the Patriarch of Constantinople anathematized the Roman Catholics in 1054, am I right? So, how is it that the Russian Church can later decide to undo that anathema by themselves? That anathema wasn’t lifted until 1965, I believe, by the Patriarch of Constantinople, but apparently the Patriarch of Moscow had no problem lifting it by themselves hundreds of years prior and whenever they wanted to.

Whether you agree with it or not, the logic of the Patriarchate of Constantinople (not the Ecumenical Patriarchate, by the way) is that the privilege granted to Moscow in 1686 of jurisdiction over Kiev was rescinded in 2018. As of 2018, according to Constantinople, Moscow no longer has canonical jurisdiction in Kiev. So again, according to that logic, the right to reverse an anathema made earlier by Moscow would then revert right back to Constantinople. I’m not trying to convince you here, but that is the logic as I understand it.

          • What are you even talking about Joseph?

When did Moscow restore Communion with the Vatican for anathemas to be “ceased” with the Roman Catholic Church? You clearly have no idea what the “ceasing of anathemas” (vs. lifting as you are referring to it) actually meant. Do you even know what the word really means in Greek, or where in the service books the collection of anathemas issued by the 7 Ecumenical councils exist, or are you even aware that they were traditionally read on the Sunday of Orthodoxy up until this “ceasing of anathemas”? Some jurisdictions still read them today, by the way.

But in order to “understand it” (the currently twisted logic you are referring to), you’ll probably need to take some Greek classes first, because I’m quite certain you haven’t really read the original 1686 documents Constantinople has been touting, and you are relying on an intentionally biased and corrupt synodal interpretation of them from the year 2018…

However, in the publication “Το Ουκρανικο Αυτοκεφαλο” by Protopresbyter Theodore Zisis (professor at the University of Thessaloniki), apart from an analytical breakdown and explanation of the REAL meaning of these words, there is a wonderful executive summary that presents an academic interpretation of these documents that differs from that which you are reading:

(page 98)

Furthermore, it’s quite important to remind people of the contents of Bartholomew’s 1992 signed letter to Patriarch Alexei of Moscow where he agreed that Philaret is non-canonical, as well as the jurisdiction of Kiev belonging under Moscow:

(page 83-84)

And by the way, why don’t you also mention to the public how many times Kiev asked Moscow for Autocephaly (that obviously wasn’t granted), proving that apart from a strange time of anomaly when the Polish empire had conquered Kiev and the Uniates took over buildings, etc (just like the 4th Crusade took over Constantinople with Latin priests, etc for 57 years), the Russian Church canonical presence and jurisdiction in Kiev was always a de facto truth.

In short, and per the original Greek documents above, your logic above is flawed to the core, and you are spreading Uniate, twisted neo-Constantinopolitan propaganda that is not consistent with the facts of history.

And if you don’t Fr. Theodore Zisis for some reason, Fr. Gotsopoulos in another 2018 book titled Ουκρανικο Αυτοκεφαλο – Συμβολη στον Διαλογο reaches similar conclusions…

And if you don’t like fr. Gotsopoulos either, why didn’t Archbishop Anastasios of Albania who was theoretically a life-long friend of Bartholomew agree with Constantinople on this matter and vehemently protested the Schism that was brought about?

  3. Looks like Dumenko will be visiting the Fanar in the next couple of days…you have to wonder if he and Bartholomew realize their goose is cooked

    • Petros, one would only hope that they realize that their goose is cooked, but knowing how things have been working out, they’re probably going to be planning even more mischief!

  4. I wonder what those two talked about. They talk about love but all they do is bring pain. I do not feel their love:

Just in 2025 they stole 16 parishes from UOC in Bukovyna where mostly Romanian (that have nothing to do with Russia) live. While Orthodox Christians are praying inside those Churches around the clock for weeks, they “transfer” them with the stroke of a pen and fake votes from people that have nothing to do with our faith. Even the Bolsheviks didn’t go this far! I expected better from a patriarch!
