EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). Vladimir Medinsky is a senior aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who led Russia’s delegation in recent peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. Medinsky draws a historical parallel between the current conflict and the Vietnam War, suggesting that Western powers, particularly the United States, have previously engaged in prolonged conflicts without achieving their objectives. He implies that Russia is prepared for a long-term engagement in Ukraine, akin to the U.S.’s involvement in Vietnam, and questions the West’s commitment to such a protracted conflict.
He also offers a vivid historical example of the annihilation of the Swedish Empire by Russian Czar Peter the Great (the historical figure Putin looks up to, according to his statements) in the early 1700s. Peter the Great repeatedly made sensible offers to the Swedes for a peace that benefits both sides. They listened to the British and the French who kept funding them (and promised troops but never delivered) – until they finally were defeated and never became an empire again…
Can anyone see the parallels?

Yes, indeed…many, many parallels.
