The Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron (IMMM) is «transported» for one night to the Church of St. Panteleimon on 113 Acharnon St. in Athens, Greece in order to reveal the lost work of the Abbot and composer Parthenios.
What you will experience: Two centuries later, leading musicologist Ioannis Arvanitis, after years of tedious research, “unlocked” the musical manuscript of Parthenios, allowing us to hear the 64 compositions of Parthenios again. On May 7, this “lost” music will cease to be buried in the manuscript and will become a living prayer.
Melodies between Heaven and Earth:
The professional Ensemble ROMEIKO, under the musical direction and vocal guidance of Yorgos Bilalis, Protosaltes, and researcher, revives with scientific fidelity the sounds that were silenced for centuries in the monastery manuscript. The Parthenios’ melodies —from the moving Akathist Hymn to the rare Gospel Pasapnoaria — revive in a performance that unites the past with the present: human voices entangled with the rhythmic pulse of the talanton and kopanos and the sounds of singing bowls and bells abolish the boundaries of time, bringing the mysticism of Meteora before your eyes.
A Publishing Event
This presentation will feature the two monumental volumes of
Parthenios’ Complete Psaltic Works (650 pages), which will be accompanied by 8 hours of sound recording, definitively closing a 200-year cycle of oblivion.

Sounds of Meteora – The composer Parthenios documentary
In this wonderful video, the historical and spiritual significance of the Meteora monasteries is emphasized, emphasizing their development as a major center of Orthodox monasticism. From the 12th century onward, monks settled on the towering rock formations, and by the 14th century—especially with the arrival of Saint Athanasios—the region experienced a flourishing of communal monastic life, spirituality, and artistic expression. This period of prosperity lasted until around the 16th century, after which Meteora entered a gradual decline due to external pressures and changing conditions.
A major focus of the text is the figure of Hieromonk Parthenios, an 18th-century abbot of the Great Meteoron Monastery. Despite arriving during a time of economic hardship and structural decay caused by foreign occupation, Parthenios revitalized the monastery through restoration projects and enrichment of its liturgical life. However, his most enduring contribution was his work in Byzantine music. A highly skilled composer, he left behind a significant body of musical compositions preserved in rare manuscripts, though their complexity and unique notation made them difficult to interpret and transmit.
In modern times, the rediscovery and transcription of Parthenios’ work—especially by musicologist Dr. Ioannis Arvanitis—has brought renewed attention to this important musical heritage. His efforts revealed the depth and originality of Parthenios’ compositions, which span a wide range of Byzantine musical forms. Today, these works are being studied, performed, and reintroduced into contemporary liturgical practice, ensuring that Parthenios’ legacy endures as a valuable part of Orthodox cultural and musical tradition.
