It is sad that so many of our Greek Orthodox Communities are focusing on public charter schools where the mentioning of Christ and Orthodoxy would be banned. Why not focus on Christ centered classically oriented schools instead! Free money is the carrot on the stick…you just need to NOT mention Christ. Lord have mercy…haven’t we become securalized enough?
I totally disagree with this approach, especially with the current Church leadership – but any church leadership… Charter schools are the only serious hope for the Greek community to preserve our heritage and spread it creating a fresh wave of Philhellenes and of people deeply educated in the Classical ideals which founded Western civilization. Charter Schools are funded by the States and the Federal Government – but they require strict auditing procedures in their establishment and during their operations. GOA and its band of thieves have n o business running any school…
The problem is that the blue/liberal states (such as NY, CA, IL) have stopped giving permits for new charter schools under heavy pressure by the teachers unions which want to perpetuate laziness and stagnation and stupidity forever… Let’s hope that the Trump administration will do the rational thing and force states not to put limits ion how many charter schools can be established. Competition will make public schools better and force the lazy teacher to work for their huge and unworthy salaries and benefits…
s for teaching religion in charter schools, I remind you that Fetullah Gulen, the Turkish Muslim cleric had established tens of charter schools (with the help of Karloutsos of all people!!) in the Midwest and particularly in Texas – amd religion somehow was taught in them… If he found the “trick” to teach religion in charter schools we could also.
BUT N0 – INVOLVING GOA IN ESTABISHING CHARTER SCHOOLS IS A NON-STARTER AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED. WE DO NOT WANT THE CORRUPT LEADERSHIP TO DESTRROY THAM FROM THE STARTR… ANYWAY – THEY COULD NOT AFFORD THE CONTINUOUS AUDITS THE CHARTER SCHOOLS HAVE TO GO THROUGH…
Nick…I agree with you on so much, but on this topic, I believe you need to rethink it.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. In my opinion and most Orthodox educators opinion, American Orthodoxy can never be in partnership with the government. It wil severly compromise our faith and give a false sense of security to our families. I have never heard of charter Orthodox schools…this will never happen and if it does, Fordham U. will be setting the curriculum. You are kidding yourselft if you think anything else would result,
What we should be focusing our political attention on is private school vouchers, not public/private partnerships such as charter schools…my humble opinion based on a lot of research.
Charter schools are private schools getting support from the Government. All those of us who supported Trump expected that he would enhance them “vouchers” program and that he would get rid of the Dept. of Education. Nothing permanent so far. But GO is not the answer either… Anywhere they put their fingers it means theft and incompetence…
Any progress has to keep the corrupt church away from our schools – period. The relative success of Hellenic charter schools in NY, Florida. N.Carolina and elsewhere speaks for itself.
