$250,000 sponsorships, $1,500 seats — but the “Beacon of Hope” honoree never showed up at Casa Cipriani

After weeks of promotion centered on Ukrainian President Zelensky, Saturday night’s high-priced “Beacon of Hope” dinner at Casa Cipriani went ahead without Zelensky in the room. The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine had advertised the Sept. 26 gala as a dinner “honoring President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” with individual seats priced at $1,500 and sponsorship packages reaching $250,000.
Equally striking is what has not appeared since the dinner: video. As of Sunday evening, despite repeated searches of news sites and publicly searchable YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, and other social-media results, we have not located a single verified publicly available video from inside the gala — not the award presentation, not Zelenskyy’s prerecorded address, and not even a short attendee clip clearly showing the proceedings. The Orthodox Observer’s photo/video archive likewise has not surfaced a 2026 Beacon of Hope video in its currently indexed material.
That is particularly notable because we now know that a Zelensky video exists.
According to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese’s post-event reporting, Zelenskyy did not appear in person. Instead, Ukraine’s UN representative Andrii Melnyk addressed the audience, after which guests were shown a prerecorded video message from Zelenskyy. Melnyk and Superhumans Center co-founder Olga Rudnieva accepted the Beacon of Hope Award on his behalf.
In other words, the man whose name and image dominated the promotion was absent from his own award dinner.
Helleniscope’s sources report that only a very small number of those present applauded the speeches, while many expressed disgust at the embarrassing situation they faced. References to Bartholomew received a very chilly response. We also learned that Elpidophoros mumbled some nonsense about “American enterprise”, as if the event was about business… Is that why nobody has posted any video? In similar recent events, videos appeared moments after the ceremonies…
The advance fundraising campaign leaves little doubt about the event’s scale. The Shrine advertised $25,000, $50,000, $100,000 and $250,000 sponsorship packages, with the top package including three priority tables and VIP-reception access. Individual seats cost $1,500. Some sponsorship levels even promised “acknowledgment in video.”
Yet when the evening arrived, Zelensky never entered Casa Cipriani.
PHOTO: The place cards reportedly included a separate pocket containing small gold flakes. At a Church-sponsored event, the detail raises an obvious question: Was this a religious fundraiser—or a display of conspicuous excess?
Organized protesters were also outside the venue. Orthodox Reflections had publicly called supporters to gather near Casa Cipriani beginning at 6:30 p.m. Unfortunately, the Nor’easter that hit the New York area this weekend prevented many from participating.
The central facts are therefore considerably less glamorous than the advance publicity:
Zelensky was honored. Zelensky was expected. Zelensky was absent. Other people accepted his award. Guests watched him on a prerecorded video. And more than 24 hours later, even that video — or any verified video from inside the heavily promoted gala — has yet to surface publicly in the sources we have been able to locate.
For a Manhattan fundraising dinner promoted around one internationally recognizable honoree, his absence — and the extraordinary scarcity of publicly available video afterward — have become two of the event’s most conspicuous facts.
