EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis).  Suddenly, the Holy Synod of Cyprus sent a letter to the (suspended and not defrocked) Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, explaining that his final fate will be decided after the Holy Synod of the Phanar decides.

Thus, the suspension of Metropolitan Tychikos of Paphos by the Holy Synod of the autocephalous Church of Cyprus has quietly evolved into a moment of far-reaching consequence for the Orthodox Christian world. At first glance, it appears to be an internal disciplinary matter within an ancient local church. However, the decision by Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus to defer the final adjudication to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople—despite Cyprus’s formally recognized autocephaly since the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD—has ignited broader debates with significant ecclesiological, political, and geopolitical ramifications.

Ecclesiologically, this case revives the contested issue of Constantinople’s supra-jurisdictional authority, particularly its role as a final court of appeal (ἐκκλητον) in the Orthodox world. While such a role is rooted in the canons of the early ecumenical councils, many autocephalous churches today—especially those aligned with the Moscow Patriarchate—reject any suggestion that the Ecumenical Patriarch holds primatial authority beyond honorific primacy. Archbishop Georgios’s deference may thus be viewed as a tacit recognition of a pan-Orthodox mechanism of accountability above local synodal decisions, potentially setting a precedent for hierarchical appeals that transcend national boundaries.

Politically, the internal vote to suspend Tychikos—passed narrowly by a 10–6 margin—reflects growing polarization within the Cypriot episcopate itself. The dispute has highlighted tensions between hierarchs more aligned with the Phanar and those favoring greater ecclesial self-assertion. The public and legal backlash from Tychikos’s supporters also underscores the fragility of unity within the Church of Cyprus and the risk of internal fragmentation over ecclesial identity and external influence.

Geopolitically, this case unfolds in the shadow of broader Orthodox realignments following the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s controversial recognition of the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2019. That move, and the subsequent rupture with the Russian Orthodox Church, deepened divisions over the scope of Constantinople’s authority and raised alarms about the politicization of ecclesiastical decisions. The Tychikos case may now serve as a test of how far other churches are willing to recognize Constantinople’s appellate role, and whether they view it as a mechanism of unity or as a potential intrusion into internal governance.

In sum, the Tychikos affair is far more than a local disciplinary issue—it is a microcosm of the theological, institutional, and geopolitical pressures facing global Orthodoxy in the 21st century. Its outcome may well shape how the Orthodox Church defines the limits of autocephaly, the legitimacy of external appeals, and the very nature of primacy and communion in an increasingly fragmented ecclesial landscape.

Archbishop of Cyprus to Tychikos: The Phanar to decide when you will perform services in Paphos

An official letter was sent by the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus to the former Metropolitan of Paphos, Mr. Tychikos. The letter, signed by Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus acting as Locum Tenens of the Metropolis of Paphos, explicitly states that Mr. Tychikos is not permitted to perform liturgical services in Paphos, with the sole exception of a permission granted to celebrate the Divine Liturgy at his mother’s memorial service.

The letter clearly states: “In the decision of the Holy Synod dated May 22, 2025, regarding your person, it is explicitly mentioned that you are defrocked and placed at the disposal of the Church, which will employ you where deemed appropriate, provided that you first submit a confession of faith acceptable to the Synod.”

However, as pointed out, “this has not happened, and mainly due to the petition you submitted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Thus, the assignment of a specific role by the Holy Synod cannot be made now but only after the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate regarding the petition.”

Consequently, “until then you are not allowed to perform liturgical services in Paphos. As an act of economy, you are granted permission to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at the Church of St. George of Mesana for the annual memorial of your mother.”

The Archbishop and Locum Tenens of the Metropolis of Paphos adds that “the Holy Synod accepted my proposal that, if you wish, you may be hosted meantime at the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus. The Holy Synod calls your attention to the strict adherence to its decisions.”

The letter concludes by emphasizing the necessity for Mr. Tychikos to comply with the decisions of the Holy Synod.

  1. The true Orthodoxy that has been handed down for centuries is being attacked, by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. All of us Orthodox Christians have been and are being negatively affected. We certainly don’t feel any security that this won’t continue and worsen.

Sacred Tradition is the very Church; without the Sacred Tradition the Church does not exist. Those who deny the Sacred Tradition deny the Church and the preaching of the Apostles.
