Charter@goarch.org: Independence for the Church of America! (English & Greek – UPDATED)

UPDATE/CORRECTION (April 8): A reader, who has been part of the GOA administration, reminded us yesterday that at the time of the previous charter change (around 2002) participation of the parishes and the public was also established, as proven by an Orthodox Observer article (link here). It was then that the email address charter@goarch.org was established.  We happily note the information.  We have asked numerous other readers on this subject, but none was able to verify knowledge or memory of using this email by the faithful as individuals. What is important here is the transparency of the whole process.  Please email your ideas and your support for an independent Orthodox Church of America at charter@goarch.org and also demand that the whole process open up and be absolutely transparent.  How? With regular monthly or bi-weekly updates of the progress by the Charter Committee, including updates of the exchanges with the Patriarchate, if any.   And in any other way possible.

ΜΕΤΑΦΡΑΣΗ ΣΤΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ ΠΑΡΑΚΑΤΩ

Remarkable news came out of yesterday’s Eparchial Synod regarding the procedure to form a new charter for GOA.  According to the official announcement, “…the process envisions the establishment of a broader Committee, in which all the organizations and bodies of the Church and of the Omogoneia will be represented, plus four representatives from each Holy Metropolis chosen by the respective hierarch. Every member of the faithful will be given the opportunity to send their opinions to a designated email address: charter@goarch.org.” Yes, my friends, the official announcement has an active link to the email!…

I believe that it is the first time that an opportunity is given to the faithful to express their opinion as individuals on a new charter and as such it is to be applauded.  Anytime that our church opens up its doors and invites the participation of its faithful towards such a momentous event it’s an occasion to be celebrated and taken advantage of.  After all, we all like to note that Orthodoxy among all branches of Christianity is known for a more democratic organization. This is not the time to analyze its significance and tell what may be hidden behind such a decision; there will be a proper time for that.  What is important now is for the faithful to express their views on the most serious of all aspects of the new charter: The establishment of an Independent Church of America.

Helleniscope has been constantly writing about the thorny issue of the Independence of our Church from the Constantinople Patriarchate.  In a most recent article, we encapsulated the meaning of Independence as “liberating for both sides”.  We said: “The Church of America will have a fighting chance to proceed to the future (hopefully on the road of Panorthodox Unity), while the Turks will have no longer a reason to blackmail the Phanar.”  Obviously, we will be discussing in the weeks and months to come, which form of Independence is most appropriate for our Church: Many support the model of the Church of Crete, others support a more clear form of “autocephaly”.  Although we realize that soon the formation of a “Committee for Independence” will be necessary, for now, we would like to call on our readers to start this effort for Independence by thinking about the following major foundations.  Emailing to charter@goarch.org your thoughts with your signed name is a good idea… If you can do it as a group, it would be an even better idea…

But let me recapitulate what Helleniscope thinks are the foundations of the Independence of our Church:

• The ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate will be spiritual and symbolic.  The Church of America will offer political support and financial support up to an annual amount to be determined and reexamined every three years.
• The election of the Archbishop and the hierarchs of the Church of America will be done by Clergy and Laity conferences following a procedure specified in the new charter.  The Constantinople Patriarch will be blessing those elected, without the right to veto them.
• The internal organization of the Church of America will be based on the increased power of the clergy-laity conferences.  The organization of the Church will be integrated under the Archbishop, in order to unify and consolidate the affairs of the Church, while most important administrative issues are to be decided in a collective synodic manner, according to the traditions of Orthodoxy.  Local branches of the Church across America will emphasize the increased power of the clergy-laity conferences.
• Transparency and accountability will be established at all levels on the basis of elaborate proposals already in existence.  As a good point to start, the publication of all payrolls at all levels should be required.
• The new charter should make special provisions that would facilitate the way to panorthodox unity in America.  Helleniscope has already proposed that such a  panorthodox unity cannot simply come “from above”, by communication and agreement among the Orthodox leaders, but it would be best if it was tried at the local, grass-roots level in whatever form feasible.

These five ideas can serve as the foundation of the new charter, although they cannot be exclusive. In any case, I am hoping that they can form the basis for a fruitful discussion. Finally, I cannot stress enough how strong a message your emails, supporting “Independence for the Church of America” can send at charter@goarch.org.

Charter@goarch.org: Ανεξαρτησία για την Εκκλησία της Αμερικής!

Αξιοσημείωτες ειδήσεις βγήκαν από τη χθεσινή Επαρχιακή Σύνοδο σχετικά με τη διαδικασία σχηματισμού ενός νέου χάρτη για την GOA. Σύμφωνα με την επίσημη ανακοίνωση, “… η διαδικασία προβλέπει τη δημιουργία μιας ευρύτερης Επιτροπής, στην οποία θα εκπροσωπούνται όλοι οι οργανισμοί και τα σώματα της Εκκλησίας και της Ομογένειας, καθώς και τέσσερις εκπρόσωποι από κάθε Ιερά Μητρόπολη που επιλέγονται από τον αντίστοιχο ιεράρχη. Καθένας από τους πιστούς θα έχει την ευκαιρία να στείλει τις απόψεις του σε μια καθορισμένη διεύθυνση email: charter@goarch.org ” Ναι, φίλοι μου, η επίσημη ανακοίνωση έχει έναν ενεργό σύνδεσμο για το email!…

Πιστεύω ότι είναι η πρώτη φορά που δίνεται η ευκαιρία στους πιστούς να εκφράσουν τη γνώμη τους για ένα νέο καταστατικό και ως εκ τούτου πρέπει να επικροτηθεί. Κάθε φορά που η εκκλησία μας ανοίγει τις πόρτες της και καλεί τη συμμετοχή των πιστών της σε ένα τόσο σημαντικό γεγονός, είναι μια ευκαιρία να γιορτάσουμε αλλά και να το εκμεταλλευτούμε. Σε τελική ανάλυση, όλοι θέλουμε να τονίζουμε ότι η Ορθοδοξία μεταξύ όλων των κλάδων του Χριστιανισμού είναι γνωστή για μια πιο δημοκρατική οργάνωση. Δεν είναι ώρα να αναλύσουμε τη σημασία της και να πούμε τι μπορεί να κρύβεται πίσω από μια τέτοια απόφαση. Θα υπάρξει η κατάλληλη στιγμή για αυτό. Αυτό που είναι σημαντικό τώρα είναι οι πιστοί να εκφράσουν τις απόψεις τους για την πιο σημαντική από όλες τις πτυχές του νέου χάρτη: Την ίδρυση μιας Ανεξάρτητης Εκκλησίας της Αμερικής.

Το Helleniscope γράφει συνεχώς για το ακανθώδες ζήτημα της Ανεξαρτησίας της Εκκλησίας μας από το Πατριαρχείο της Κωνσταντινούπολης. Σε ένα πρόσφατο άρθρο, ενσωματώσαμε την έννοια της Ανεξαρτησίας ως “απελευθέρωση και για τις δύο πλευρές”. Είπαμε: “Η Εκκλησία της Αμερικής θα έχει έτσι μια καλή ευκαιρία να προχωρήσει στο μέλλον (ελπίζουμε στο δρόμο της Πανορθόδοξης Ενότητας), ενώ οι Τούρκοι δεν θα έχουν πλέον λόγο να εκβιάζουν το Φανάρι.” Προφανώς, θα συζητήσουμε τις επόμενες εβδομάδες και μήνες, ποια μορφή ανεξαρτησίας είναι η πιο κατάλληλη για την Εκκλησία μας: Πολλοί υποστηρίζουν το μοντέλο της Εκκλησίας της Κρήτης, άλλοι υποστηρίζουν την καθαρή «αυτοκεφαλία». Αν και συνειδητοποιούμε ότι σύντομα θα είναι απαραίτητη η δημιουργία μιας «Επιτροπής Ανεξαρτησίας», προς το παρόν, θα θέλαμε να καλέσουμε τους αναγνώστες μας να ξεκινήσουν την προσπάθειά μας για την Ανεξαρτησία σκεφτόμενοι με βάση τα παρακάτω  σημαντικά θεμέλια. Στείλτε email στο charter@goarch.org τις σκέψεις σας σχετικά με την Ανεξαρτησία με το υπογεγραμμένο όνομά σας – είναι πολύ καλή ιδέα … Εάν μπορείτε να το κάνετε ως ομάδα/κοινότητα, θα ήταν μια ακόμη καλύτερο…

Αλλά επιτρέψτε μου να ανακεφαλαιώσω τι πιστεύει tο Helleniscope για τα θεμέλια της Ανεξαρτησίας της Εκκλησίας μας:

• Οι δεσμοί με το Πατριαρχείο της Κωνσταντινούπολης θα είναι πνευματικοί και συμβολικοί. Η Εκκλησία της Αμερικής θα προσφέρει πολιτική και οικονομική υποστήριξη έως και ένα ετήσιο ποσό που θα καθορίζεται και θα επανεξετάζεται κάθε τρία χρόνια.
• Η εκλογή του Αρχιεπισκόπου και των ιεραρχών της Εκκλησίας της Αμερικής θα πραγματοποιείται από κληρικολαϊκές συνελεύσεις, ακολουθώντας μια διαδικασία που ορίζεται στο νέο χάρτη. Ο Πατριάρχης της Κωνσταντινούπολης θα ευλογεί όσους εκλέγονται, χωρίς το δικαίωμα “βέτο”.
• Η εσωτερική οργάνωση της Εκκλησίας της Αμερικής θα βασίζεται στην αυξημένη δύναμη των κληρικολαϊκών συνελεύσεων. Η οργάνωση της Εκκλησίας θα ενσωματωθεί υπό τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο, προκειμένου να ενοποιήσει τις υποθέσεις της Εκκλησίας, ενώ τα σημαντικότερα διοικητικά ζητήματα πρέπει να αποφασίζονται με συλλογικό συνολικό τρόπο, σύμφωνα με τις παραδόσεις της Ορθοδοξίας. Τοπικοί κλάδοι της Εκκλησίας σε ολόκληρη την Αμερική θα δώσουν έμφαση στην αυξημένη δύναμη των κληρικoλαϊκών συνελεύσεων.
• Η διαφάνεια και η λογοδοσία θα καθιερωθούν σε όλα τα επίπεδα με βάση πολύπλοκες προτάσεις που υπάρχουν ήδη. Ως καλό σημείο εκκίνησης προτείνεται η υποχρεωτική δημοσίευση όλων των μισθοδοσιών σε όλα τα επίπεδα.
• Ο νέος χάρτης θα πρέπει να προβλέπει ειδικές διατάξεις που θα διευκολύνουν τον δρόμο προς την πανορθόδοξη ενότητα στην Αμερική. Το Helleniscope έχει ήδη προτείνει ότι μια τέτοια πανορθόδοξη ενότητα δεν μπορεί απλώς να προέλθει «από ψηλά», με την επικοινωνία και τη συμφωνία των ηγετών των διαφόρων εκκλησιών, αλλά θα ήταν καλύτερο να δοκιμαστεί σε τοπικό, λαϊκό επίπεδο με οποιαδήποτε μορφή τούτο είναι εφικτό.

Αυτές οι πέντε ιδέες μπορούν να χρησιμεύσουν ως το θεμέλιο του νέου χάρτη, αν και φυσικά μπορούν να εμπλουτιστούν. Σε κάθε περίπτωση, ελπίζω ότι μπορούν να αποτελέσουν τη βάση για μια εποικοδομητική συζήτηση. Τέλος, δεν μπορώ να υπερτονίσω πόσο ισχυρό είναι ένα μήνυμα που μπορείτε να στείλετε με το email σας, υποστηρίζοντας την «Ανεξαρτησία για την Εκκλησία της Αμερικής» στο charter@goarch.org.
